What does a podiatrist do?

Foot care specialist

As a podiatrist, I am a specialist for foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back pain, or any complaints related to the musculoskeletal system that stem from abnormal functioning and/or misalignment of the feet.

I can help with complaints such as:

  • Pain in the feet, knees, hips, or back (including during sports or daily activities)
  • Toe problems caused by misalignment of the toes
  • Persistent calluses or corns
  • Nail issues, such as ingrown toenails or other nail disorders
  • Conditions like Diabetes Mellitus and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Do you recognize any of these complaints? Make an appointment for an initial consultation at Podotherapie Stap.

How I work

Initial consultation

During your first appointment, I will ask you questions to get a better understanding of your concerns and/or symptoms. I will then examine the root cause of your complaints. This includes assessing the alignment of your feet, knees, hips, and back, checking for pressure points, skin and nail issues, and performing a targeted palpation to assess pain. I will also evaluate the range of motion in your feet and ankles, and assess your gait for any abnormalities or restrictions. Additionally, I will inspect your shoes for signs of visible wear. Based on this examination, I will make a diagnosis and create an individualized treatment plan.

Treatment options

Podotherapy Stap offers various treatment methods, including:

Following the diagnosis, we will start a customized treatment plan. For all treatments, you will receive personal advice regarding your condition and the available treatment options

Podiatric Insoles

Improving foot alignment and/or reducing pressure points

Podiatric insoles can help with foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back pain, as well as any complaints related to the musculoskeletal system stemming from abnormal foot function or alignment.

For example, they can address instability or fatigue in the feet/legs, knock-knees, and more.

How are the insoles made?

During the examination, a digital impression of your feet is taken. Based on this, I digitally design the necessary adjustments to your foot position. These adjustments are then sent to a CNC machine that produces the insoles, which are then finished and customized for your feet.

What is the delivery time?

The insoles are typically ready within a week, depending on the schedule.

Toe pieces / Orthotics

Improving toe alignment and/or relieving pressure on certain areas

An orthotic is a device used to address toe issues, such as overlapping toes or corns. It is custom-made from silicone to fit the shape of your foot and the specific complaint.

Instrumental foot treatment

Treating nails and skin conditions on the feet

An instrumental foot treatment addresses conditions like ingrown toenails, calluses, or corns. It involves professional care for nail or skin issues that go beyond basic foot maintenance.

What is the difference between a podiatrist and a pedicure?

A pedicure focuses on the structural care and cosmetic treatment of the feet, such as trimming nails or removing corns and calluses. A podiatrist, on the other hand, handles more complex conditions, such as ingrown toenails or using nail braces. As a podiatrist, I work to identify the root cause of your symptoms and create a treatment plan to relieve your complaints.

Nail brace

Preventing ingrown toenails

An orthonyxie, more commonly known as a nail brace, is a wire placed on the toenail that changes the nail's curvature. By applying tension to the brace, the nail is gradually pulled straight, and pressure on the nail fold is relieved. This can help prevent or treat ingrown toenails.

How is the nail brace made?

During your appointment, the brace can often be applied immediately, provided there is enough space in the nail fold. Using a thin wire, I create a custom brace in the shape of your nail. The brace is then placed on the nail, and tension is applied, straightening the nail. It is secured with a small amount of adhesive, allowing you to continue using your toe normally.

Taping

Temporarily relieving foot pain

Taping can offer temporary relief from foot pain. There are two types of tape: medical tape (colored tape) and white sports tape. Depending on your condition, I will apply either type, or a combination, to address your symptoms.

Sandals or Slippers

Custom-made sandals or slippers

Your feet deserve perfectly fitting sandals or slippers. With us, you can have a custom footbed, made from your podiatric insole, incorporated into a sandal or slipper of your choice. You can select the style and color you prefer, ensuring that you can walk comfortably and pain-free in your personalized footwear.

Shoe advice

Finding the right shoes for your feet

Every foot is unique, and so is every shoe. But how do you know what makes a good shoe?

Together, we will assess your feet and identify the type of shoes that will best suit them. A well-fitting shoe is crucial for preventing foot pain and avoiding further complications.

Diabetes and/or Rheumatism

Preventing pressure points and wounds

A medically certified pedicure with a special diabetes or rheumatism qualification is allowed to treat these specific conditions.

Are you a Diabetic?

Ask your diabetesnurse, the internist, or your GP's practice nurse if you qualify for a referral to a podiatrist. Depending on your SIMS classification, I may be able to provide a referral for a reimbursed pedicure.

Are you a Rheumatoid arthritis patient?

Speak with your GP to see if you qualify for a referral to a podiatrist.
